Fire Service Week observed
ITANAGAR, Apr 20: The Fire and Emergency Services of fire station here observed the Fire Service Week from April 14 to 20.
Several fire awareness programmes, including mock drills of rescue operation, first aid and demonstration of portable fire extinguishers were organized at various places within the Capital Complex to mark the Fire Service Week.
Easter Sunday celebrated
ITANAGAR, Apr 20: The Easter Sunday was celebrated by all the Baptist Churches under Apatani Baptist Association (ABA), Ziro, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“In his great mercy, god has given us new birth into living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” Area Supervisor of ABA Pastor J. Lalrinawma said quoting from Bible at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Baptist believers organized dry fasting and prayer in their respective Churches from Saturday evening to prepare themselves for the day. The day was marked by Sun Rise Service at the dawn break at their respective churches.
Later, Sunday School students celebrated the day by singing and dancing. Special Easter Services were also organized in all the Churches.
VKAJ conducts personality development camps
ITANAGAR, Apr 20: Vivekananda Kendra Arun Jyoti (VKAJ) here conducted a series of non residential personality development camps for the students of Class IV to X of Capital Complex at VKV, Chimpu, Police Colony, Vivek Vihar, VKV, Nirjuli and NERIST from April 11 to 20.
A total of 150 students attended the camps conducted by the members and activists of VKAJ.
Various sessions were held to inculcate in students the sense of patriotism, importance of self discipline, cultural values, social service etc.

Beijing says no to Arunachal youth in India delegation
NEW DELHI, Apr 20: India-
Youth Affairs Minister Jitendra Singh has replied to Beijing saying that the entire exchange must be cancelled if it did not want youth from Arunachal Pradesh in the delegation.
According to a report in The Indian Express today, Jitendra Singh shot off a strongly worded letter to External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, asking him to cancel the trip unless China drops the condition.
“I believe these incremental steps by China to challenge India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh and its other territories must be nipped in the bud, lest these lead to bigger and more direct challenges,” wrote Singh, who is also Minister of State for Defence.
According to Singh’s letter, the Chinese embassy conveyed to his Ministry that “no youth from the state of Arunachal Pradesh be included in the youth delegation” after which the matter was referred to the Ministry of External Affairs for advice and guidance.
The MEA, however, sent no response, a fact that has also been recorded by Singh in his letter. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports sent its first letter on March 12 stating that they had been “informed orally” by the Chinese side to avoid any nomination from Arunachal Pradesh. The letter, therefore, sought “necessary direction” on the subject. This was followed by another reminder on April 3.
While the MEA never got back with a firm direction, sources said, it withdrew the political clearance given to the Minister and Secretary of Youth Affairs to head the delegation on grounds that India was in “election mode” and it may not be the right time to undertake a visit as bilateral issues may arise.
When his comments were sought, Singh said he never intended to travel as he was preoccupied with electoral work and that even last year, he had sent a ministry official instead. But he said he was outraged by China’s decision to exclude youth from Arunachal Pradesh.
“I think that is very serious. I find it disturbing and absolutely absurd. How can China dictate whom we can include in our delegation and from where? That’s for us to decide. I have taken it up with the External Affairs Minister and asked that the delegation not be allowed to go if China insists on this condition,” Singh said.

56th APLS literary sitting held
ITANAGAR, Apr 20: The 56th literary sitting of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) was held at the Conference Hall of J N State Museum here today instead of usual second Sunday sitting of this month due to general election.
Chaired by its president Y D Thongchi, the session started with one minute silence observed by its members to pay homage to literary stalwart Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a Nobel laureate from South America who wrote in Spanish language and Khushwant Singh, an Indian writer of his repute.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez died Thursday last. He was best known for his masterpiece of magical realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude. The 1967 novel sold more than 30 million copies and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.
In his address, Thongchi briefed the literary contributions on both the renowned authors.
Further Thongchi extended gratefulness to NEEPCO authority for awarding Rs.one lakh each to Tagang Taki, East Siang district and Zongsam Wangsom, Changlang district for their contributions in literary pursuits under corporate social responsibility (CSR) scheme. The award is being given with the recommendation of the APLS for the year 2014. The NEEPCO award (in cheque) will ceremonially be conferred on both the awardees in APLS annual conference likely to be held in June next.
An usual literary sitting was switched on with a creative story entitled “Kindness towards Animals as to human” by a student member Aryaman Das Bora followed by another literary piece “Memorable Day in my life” by another student Rindo Pertin.

Accommodation problem

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw kind attention of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) authority towards problem faced by the women scholars of RGU. A new hostel has been constructed for us and we have submitted our application in the month of February but till now the selection list is not out. We are eagerly waiting for the list to come out, so that we get accommodation in hostel as it is very difficult to reside outside the campus. Therefore we earnestly urge the university administrative authority to look into the matter and take immediate action.

Has PPA turned its stand on Refugee issue?
Dear Editor,
This has reference to the April 14 issue of Outlook magazine, which carried an article
on the influences and issues that are playing on the minds of the electorate in this
election. A media entrepreneur Prahlad Chakma, has been quoted in it saying that
the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) candidate from his constituency has “promised
to take up the Chakma issues and get us voting rights, birth certificates, etc.”
and that the community has been holding regular meetings to build a consensus to
vote for him. This brings a critical issue back to the forefront of Arunachal’s own
political dialogue. While there are over a 1 lakh of estimated Chakma refugees in
the area, 1600 have been enrolled to be eligible to vote-
While the issue of the grant of voting rights to these 1600 needs another occasion for debate, what I would like to put forth is a question to the PPA and its current leaders. If memory and historical fact serves right, it was the PPA under the leadership of its own stalwarts like Tomo Riba, Bakin Pertin, Kamen Ringu, L Wanglat and many others who raised a strong objection to the grant of citizenship to Chakmas settled as refugees in that area by the Govt of India. As a matter of fact, the Arunachal Congress (a briefly existing regional party) also contested and won a Parliamentary election precisely on this issue. If we are to believe the Outlook story as many fellow Indians across the country would, the PPA of today seems to have turned its stand on the issue completely upside down. I would be very keen to know, as would all of Arunachal, whether this turnaround is indeed true? And if it is, should the PPA continue to call itself by that name? Because for a party born to protect the rights of the indigenous people of Arunachal, such an act is not just a betrayal of the expectations of the people, but sadly of the very vision of its founders.
We can scarcely afford to hurt the spirits of these departed legends and offend the sentiments of the living icons, pained as they must be with the way money and muscle power and not ideology plays out in our world of politics today.

Arunachal need good health care facilities
Dear Editor,
Since childhood I have been observing the pathetic condition of our state. There is no strong and generous leader who takes initiative for establishment of medical colleges, IITs, other colleges or universities for the convenient of the students who belong to poor family but are interested to pursue technical course. Many patients of our state are dying due to absence of medical colleges and inadequate medical instruments as well as due to lack of medical experts.
Despite having many highly qualified, experienced and more aware citizen as well as development of science and technology still there are many evil minded, greedy, heartless people in our country and mainly in our state i.e., Arunachal Pradesh.
I encountered a tragic moment when my elder sister Miss Kanu Marbom who was the first child of my parents demised on 1st April, 2014. An incident happened with her on 30th March, 2014. My parents and elder brothers took her to our district hospital Daporijo and within no time brought her to RK Mission Hospital, Itanagar. We did all tests and treatments at RKM hospital. The main cause for her deteriorating condition was detected but there was not enough medical facilities to cure and treat so that her life could be saved. Few days later around 3:30 am early morning we took her to Guwahati for further treatment. I was holding her as we started journey. She was in my arm while traveling by bolero car but my bad luck she died. I could not save her life. We know that everyone must die sooner or later. We would have been more satisfied if we were able to give treatment to my sister. She died without saying any words to us. We did not know what she wanted to say to us and wished/desired from us after her death. This incident reflects that there is really urgent need of good medical facilities along with better trained doctor and medical experts in our state. Due to lack of good medical facilities my sister could not be given proper treatment at right time which caused her death.
Other than lack of proper health facilities, our society also faces social challenges. Many of our students are going stray in life and indulging in criminal activities. These incidents are happening because of the weakness and nepotism of the people. We need leader who work for the welfare of citizen and fulfill all their basic requirements. Lastly, we the family members of late Kanu Marbom would like to thank all the relatives and others people for their help and contributions.

Unearth the truth
Dear Editor,
Sudden and untimely demise of poll official Mathew Dabi in mysterious circumstances has sent shock wave. Now the question everyone is asking how come an official on polling duty goes missing during the whole half period of the polling process and no one notices. Is not the presiding officer answerable? Sector magistrate visits every polling station hourly, how come the missing official on duty has not been reported to him. These polling officials should be question properly and they should be made answerable to the circumstances leading to Dabi’s death. The involvement of the villagers cannot be ruled out as the villagers were reportedly discouraging the relatives not to venture in that spot from where the death body was recovered. Investigating agency need to unearth the truth. Although it is impossible to have another Mathew Dabi now but we can at least find a solace if culprit involved is punished as per the law of the land.
